Who is responsible

Do Better Norge (publishing as DoBetterNorge International) is an independent advocacy project founded by Dave Gilligan, who is the data controller for this website. Technology and hosting are provided by Blue Note Logic Inc. Do Better Norge is not a registered charity.

What we collect

  • Newsletter subscription — your email address and your preferred language, when you subscribe.
  • Journalist / media registration — your name, email address, outlet, role, and country, when you register in the Press Centre.
  • Abuse prevention — the IP address you send a form from (for IPv6, only its network part), to stop automated abuse of our forms.
  • Admin sign-in — on the sign-in page for our editors: the email address entered, the IP address it came from (for IPv6, only its network part), the time, and whether the sign-in succeeded, to stop password guessing.
  • Server logs — standard web-server and PHP logs (IP address, the time, the page requested, and your browser's user-agent string), kept for security and troubleshooting.

This site sets one cookie that remembers the language you are viewing it in; the admin sign-in page also uses a session cookie. Neither is used for tracking or advertising. We do not sell personal data.

Why we use it, and our legal basis

  • Consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)) — to send you the newsletter and press-release emails you asked for. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interests (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) — to keep the website secure, prevent abuse of our forms, and operate server logging.

How long we keep it

  • Newsletter — your email address and language are kept until you unsubscribe. Every newsletter email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing deletes your address. If you never confirm your sign-up, it is deleted 7 days after we sent the confirmation email.
  • Journalist registration — your name, email address, outlet, role and country are kept until you ask us to remove you, and are deleted at the latest 24 months after you registered. If you never verify your registration, it is deleted 7 days after we sent the verification email.
  • Abuse-prevention network data — the IP address or network stored with a sign-up or registration, and the records of failed and successful admin sign-ins, are used only to stop automated abuse and are cleared after 30 days.
  • Web server and PHP logs (IP address, time, page requested, browser) — kept for about six weeks, then deleted automatically.
  • Mail delivery logs, which record the address a confirmation email was sent to — kept for about five weeks, then deleted automatically.

Where your data is stored

Your data is hosted in the European Union, at Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany.

Content from Google and YouTube

Our pages load fonts from Google Fonts, and the video pages show thumbnails from YouTube and embed YouTube's video player, using YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). The player loads as soon as you open a video page. To fetch these, your browser sends your IP address and browser details to Google, whose own privacy policy applies; YouTube may also store data in your browser when you open or play a video.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access your personal data and to have it corrected or deleted; to restrict or object to how we process it; and to data portability. To exercise any of these rights, email press@dobetternorge.com.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data-protection supervisory authority. In Norway this is the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet), datatilsynet.no.

Unsubscribing

Every newsletter email, including the one asking you to confirm your subscription, has an unsubscribe link. Following it deletes your address from our list straight away. You can also ask us to delete it by emailing press@dobetternorge.com.
